Guide to Renting a Medela Symphony Breast Pump: Which Kit Should You Purchase?

Updated: Jul 29

Medela Symphony Hospital Grade Breast Pump

There are several reasons why you might opt for a hospital-grade breast pump. These pumps are the most powerful, efficient, and dependable options on the market. They are specifically engineered for frequent use and provide cycle speeds and suction strength that personal pumps cannot match, making them invaluable for kickstarting and maintaining your milk supply. Whether you are tending to your newborn in a medical setting, using them to address jaundice, or simply prefer the convenience of pumping and bottling for your family, renting a hospital-grade pump can save you both time and money. However, once you've made the decision to rent, how do you determine which components are necessary? The various options are outlined in detail below.

Retail Kit - Excellent Choice For Long-Term Pumping

The Medela Symphony Double Pumping Rental Kit with Personal Fit Plus is designed for comfort and ease of use. There are minimal parts to wash, and the premium material will withstand the demands of heavy long-term pumping. The thick, single-piece membrane is built to last and there are no parts you'll have to replace. If you know you are planning to pump a lot, this is the perfect kit to purchase.

Initiation Kit - Perfect For Initiating Your Supply & Long Term Use

These kits are often provided in hospital if your baby is in the NICU and unable to fully feed at the breast. It often comes with an extra set of 30ml bottles that are great for the first week or two of pumping. If cared for properly, they can be used for an extended period of heavy pumping. This kit can be purchased with your rental package, and your Baby Experts nurse can show you how to care for it properly and extend it's life to the duration of your pumping. The membrane is a two-piece system that will need to be replaced at regular intervals with heavy pumping. However, these valve/membrane pieces are affordable and easy to purchase online and have delivered with your order.

24-Hour Single Use Kits - Not For Long Term Use

Recently provided in hospitals to manage a supply-chain shortage, these single-sided disposable kits are designed for use up to one day of pumping. In our experience of using them with patients in hospital, the membrane valve will start to fail after a few days, resulting in less suction and sub-optimal pump functioning. We do not recommend using these kits beyond one day. If you are in hospital, request the LOS kits. Alternatively, you can purchase either of the long-term kits with your rental package.
