The Impact of Ending Free Formula Samples in Hospitals: A Closer Look at the Baby Friendly Initiative

Updated: Nov 21

As a baby, your parents may have been given a gift bag containing free formula samples, coupons, and other items upon leaving the hospital with you. However, this practice is now discouraged due to its detrimental effects on breastfeeding success. To ensure that breastfeeding is properly encouraged from the beginning, we must carefully consider our messaging and influence. The WHO code and BFI are guiding us towards a future where breastfeeding is acknowledged and valued for its beneficial impact on health outcomes.

The WHO code refers to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, which is a set of guidelines created by the World Health Organization to regulate the marketing of breast-milk substitutes, such as infant formula. The purpose of the WHO code is to protect and promote breastfeeding and ensure that breast-milk substitutes are used safely when necessary.

BFI stands for Baby-Friendly Initiative, which is a global program launched by the WHO and UNICEF to encourage maternity facilities to implement the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. The aim of BFI is to support and promote breastfeeding as the best way to feed infants. In Edmonton, the Misericordia and Grey Nuns Community Hospitals are BFI certified facilities.

Implications of following the WHO code and implementing BFI when having a baby include:

- Increased rates of breastfeeding initiation and duration

- Improved health outcomes for both the baby and mother

- Reduced risks of infections and diseases for the baby

- Enhanced bonding between the baby and mother

- Better long-term health outcomes for the baby

By adhering to the WHO code and participating in the BFI program, healthcare facilities can create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers and contribute to the overall health and well-being of infants.
